A topic that’s popped up a few too many times for our liking is the scenario of the customer blaming the website for lack of business growth. This is despite the fact that the customer did not touch the website since the day of launch. Isn’t that hilarious?
It boggles my mind that people expect to launch a website into the world of the internet, not update it for years at a time and then come back crying that it “didn’t work”. Well here’s a newsflash, your website will not work in bringing in business if you don’t focus any time or effort towards it. If you’re expecting your site to bring in dollars, you must update the content such as your blog or portfolio or change up imagery every so often. In addition to your freshness of content, you must promote your website through any channels you can. Social media, word of mouth, business cards and email newsletter blasts are just a start.
I’d now like to take a moment to share an email with you from one of particular customer, with the names changed for identity protection reasons:
I didn’t even feel any anger towards this customer, rather I couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit. Here we have a case of a client that did not lay a finger on their site since launch yet were somehow expecting it to magically produce leads and increase profits. We put effort into making a beautiful product for them and I had personally forewarned them about updating the website periodically in order to maximize its benefit. Instead of listening to the professionals, the client did nothing.
The moral of the story is this: “I’m Grinding when you’re sleeping”~Gary Vaynerchuk. It’s as simple as that. Your website can become stale like 21-day old bread.
I sincerely hope this helps clear up any confusion for anyone expecting to send a website out into the world and is expecting results without effort. Things just don’t work like that, there is no such thing as overnight success. Constant effort must be put into your website in order to realize real results.
